If a Squad is active, they're simply going to defend/Patrol a designated area in a specified group(s) or train. Have the basics (mining, digging, maybe one or two other things thrown in here) on by default for all dwarves, including migrants(and dwarves that mature into adults). So it's entirely possible dwarves start off without being allowed to mine or dig (doesn't make sense, but sure). #Dwarf fortress stress how to#What Brassqund mentioned makes sense as it's likely DF defaults dwarves to certain tasks and I just didn't know how to adjust that. Interesting, though i've had multiple designations work just fine (sometimes I set a higher priority and they eventually get to it). So if by chance you've set all your dwarves to be able to mine, no one's gonna chop your trees. an embarrassingly long while: dwarves can't have a combination of 'mining' 'woodcutting' and, I think it's 'hunting,' at the same time they can only have one of those labors active at a time. Originally posted by no life, no problem:I'd like to toss my own two cents in, 'cause I didn't know about it when I started playing for. More often than not cutting trees doesn't work, and mining functions as intended. Shows the tree texture highlighted, and unpause (usually Esc to exit the menu first). Dwarves were correctly assigned to chop trees (d, t, enter to select starting axes then enter to select ending axes). The one map that seemed to function was a "Play Now" Dwarf generation, though it's likely random and just a coincidence. ![]() Marking them at ground level, had plenty of axes (customized dwarves to have 2~3). It was initially, however I went through a step by step guide to speed up the learning process. Just as a fun exercise, go into your troubled game, mark a tree at ground level, turn off tree cutting on all your dwarves, unpause long enough for them to drop their axes, then reassign them to tree cutting. #Dwarf fortress stress free#You probably are trying to mark trees above ground level, or don't have a free axe, or anyone assigned to tree cutting. I troubleshoot people's games all the time, and "can't cut down trees" is entirely user error.
